"If anyone wants to follow in my footsteps he must give up all right to himself...For the man who wants to save his life will lose it, but the man who loses his life for my sake will save it.' (Luke 9:23) This is one of the few places in the Gospels where Christ bluntly states that one of the necessary conditions for enlightenment is that the self be transcended and thus eliminatd; he must let go of himself and stop clinging to life.
